Kennametal Swiss Tools Specialized for Small, Complex Components
PMTS 2025: The TopSwiss MBS Medical Line inserts feature a specialized coating and sharp cutting edges for optimized surface finishes and reduced tool pressure.
Kennametal showcases its TopSwiss MBS (Micro Boring Solid) is designed to provide maximum accuracy when machining complex, small components for defense, medical, transportation, fluid transfer and small-parts machining applications. The TopSwiss MBS Medical Line (ML) inserts feature a specialized coating and sharp cutting edges for optimized surface finishes and reduced tool pressure, providing precision and biocompatibility for medical-grade applications. They are well suited for components like bone screws, tulip heads, dental implants and surgical instruments.
Specifically designed for machining materials such as stainless steel, titanium or cobalt chrome, the ML inserts feature the KCSM25S coating, which is said to provide a smooth, polished surface to reduce chip adhesion and improve component surface quality. Along with the coating, the inserts feature a specialized lead and relief angle that can withstand high tool pressure and has coolant delivered directly through the tool to the cutting edge to reduce heat and improve chip control.
For optimal performance, Kennametal recommends users pair the inserts with HP toolholders, which offer high precision and repeatability to centerline of ±5 μm, (±0.0002"). The HP toolholders are said to be user-friendly, featuring a specialized lock nut that requires only hand tightening for most applications; wrench tightening is required for applications that use high-pressure coolant of 70 bar or 1,000 psi and above.
