Toolholders
Toolposts and gang plates are common devices used to secure square-shank “stick” tools on a lathe, while tool blocks are often used on turret lathes. Toolholder manufacturers continue to develop designs that enable fast tool changeovers when setting up lathes for a new job. In addition, modular tooling systems by which coolant is supplied internally and directly to the cutting edge can help improve chip breakage and evacuation. Toolholders for milling spindles (and live-tool spindles for lathes) use different mechanisms for clamping the shanks of tools — drills, taps, end mills and so on — including set screw, collet, hydraulic compression and shrink-fit.
